Was that all it was?
Had the timing not been on the nose of Finn's own personal affairs would Aurelius have answered him more truly than he had? Finn needed to know the answer to that question. He needed to know what was happening, because he couldn't take the uncertainty. There was enough uncertainty in his life, right now.
Worse than all that though, was the pain on his friend's face, written like the lines of a tragic romance doomed from the start. Finn had read enough of those to know they were called 'tragic' romances for a very good reason and now? Now he'd set foot among those very pages and their ink and he just wanted back out. Out of this Shakespearean drama that was tearing his body and soul apart.
He'd lost so many pieces of himself by now he didn't know how many he had left to give, but he'd give them all to Aur if they'd make him stay.
If they'd keep his great, overly-protective Bear safe from any harm.
Keep him safe...
The Pirate lowered to one of his knees before the King.
"I don't want you to 'bow' before me," Finn tried to explain, his finger hooking against the Warrior's chin to raise his eyes so theirs might meet.
"I just want to be near you. I want you to live and be happy. I just can't-" he could only visibly wince at the imagined image of it, "I can't let you die. I won't. I've let enough people slip through my fingers. You can't be one of them."
He placed both hands on each of Aur's cheeks, his eyes pleading with the Bear's.
"Please, just- there has to be another way..."
His head dipped as he pulled his hands back, grasping the chain that hung from his neck and pooling the metal into his palm. He felt naked without the familiar weight of the necklace upon him. Like he'd removed the only piece of armor he'd ever worn, but he tucked the necklace into Aurelius's palm and curled the King's large fingers around the coin.
"Take it," the Pirate's tone making it clear it was not a request he was making, but a demand, "I need to know someone- something's looking out for you."
He must sound so stupid.
What could he say? The big dumb Bear made him stupid.
He was leaning into Aur's face, his bloodied hand keeping the King's curled around the necklace while his other returned to reside against Aur's cheek. Finn's lips hovering so close to his and yet just out of reach, indecision flickering through watery eyes brimming with fear.
For once.
He wanted nothing more than to be the one able to protect the man that was always protecting him.
